Lowell's Bio

Lowell's rhythm/drumming muse was born the summer of 1956, the first time he heard Elvis Presley's voice singing "Don't Be Cruel" on the radio. Though only nine years old at the time, he remembers that experience vividly to this day. Lowell immediately set two goals for himself, 1) to somehow, in someway, become part of the music, and 2) to grow sideburns.

Lowell's infatuation with Rock 'n' Roll continued to grow. In 1958 he joined and became the Virginia representative of the International Jerry Lee Lewis Fan Club.

In 1961, Lowell took up drums. One may wonder what the connection is from Elvis and Jerry Lee (famous singers) to becoming a drummer. It is a very small leap from Elvis/Jerry Lee's musical "performance art," to drums and drumming at the spiritual level. The drums are right at the heart of the matter, expressing and exuding the spritual power of music. Anyone who has ever heard Elvis and/or Jerry Lee knows that theirs is an extraordinarily exuberant, life affirming, truly American, proud, and free spirit, to be sure! Lowell totally connected with that spirit from the start. That spiritual connection inspired Lowell to be a musician, and then guided and shaped his whole approach to playing music/rhythm/drums thereafter. Lowell plays drums from the spirit ...in a way that keeps the music alive! ...with heart, soul, passion, and ...a reverence ...for music, musicians, and audience alike.

Besides earning a Bachelor of Music Education from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Master of Arts in Education and Human Development from the George Washington University, Lowell has continuously engaged in a life-long quest for increased knowledge of the concepts and skills of drumming. Lowell's "professional" musical experiences ("gigs") span four decades and range in diversity and scope from having been a regular percussionist with the Richmond Symphony at one extreme, to performing on the Johnny Carson Show while on tour as drummer/musical director with internationally acclaimed Belly Dance Celebrity "Little Egypt." Lowell has played everything from burlesque to caberet, to country, to polka, to jazz, and rock, and so many wedding gigs that he developed an allergy to egg rolls ["rimshot!"].
